Lots can be gleaned from children's furniture in terms of form and function specifically space saving innovations like the time proven loft bed. When furnishing for small spaces that are 500 square feet or less, one has to be innovative and creative about how to carve out areas for working, sleeping, relaxing, entertaining, and sleep overs. As in previous posts, modularity, and convertible furniture are key to small spaces.
Those loft beds are great. Good design.

Vertical space is often overlooked when designing a room. The examples shown here are inspiring! Last summer I built a set of simple loft beds for our twin boys. (http://tinyurl.com/b2l4ge) The effective usable floor space easily tripled, providing more play room as well as some much needed personal space for each boy! After seeing the dramatic change to their bedroom, and the fantastic designs shown here, I am beginning to think that the concept of loft-style platforms for use in other areas (such as the home-office) are overdue for serious consideration!
